How to Password Protect a Directory in cPanel

Password protecting a directory avoids access to some parts of the user’s website by requiring other users to enter a username and a password. Password protection enables the user to require a username and a password to access a folder within your site from the web. Take note that by protecting a folder, it will also protect all the folders within that folder. User should also be created to access the protected directory. The password-protected directory can have any name, no matter what the actual directory is called.

1. Log in to cPanel.

2. Scroll down then click the Password Protect Directories link in the Security section of the cPanel interface.

3. Select the folder you want to protect by clicking on its name.

4. To password protect the /demo directory, click the demo link.

5. Under the Security Settings section, select the check box to protect the directory with a password.

6. Enter the name of the protected directory in the box provided.

7. Then click the Save button.

8. The directory is now successfully protected.

9. Now, create at least one user with password to access the directory.

10. Click the Go Back link.

11. Enter the username in the box provided. The username can be anything that you can think of.

12. Enter the password below.

13. Then, re-enter the password in the box provided.

14. Click the Add/modify authorized user button.

15. The protected directory now has one user. Just repeat the process if you wish to add user that you want to grant access for. Click the Go Back link.

16. The active user of the directory can now be seen under the Authorized Users section. If you wish to modify the password, add, or delete users, just go back in this page.

17. Go back to the directory list by clicking the link below.

18. Click the Up one level link.

19. If you see that the demo directory has a lock box, then the directory is already protected. Click the Home button located at the upper left corner of the page to return to the Home page. You now know how to password protect a directory in the cPanel.

20. Remember to click the Log out button when finished for security reasons. This is the end of the demo.
