How to Setup Hotlink Protection in cPanel

In dealing with the World Wide Web, eventually, some websites would have the intent of grasping files out of our system by linking themselves on images on your website. Hotlink protection prevents other websites to gain access over the files on your website. Website files are pretty much the body of the websites.

1. Login to cPanel.

2. Scroll down and locate the Hotlink Protection icon. It is in the Security section.

3. Click the Hotlink Protection icon.

4. Hotlink protection prevents other websites from linking themselves to certain files, mostly images, on another website. You would want to prevent this especially if you have copyrighted images or if you simply want to save bandwidth

5. In the text box just below the page where you are in right now, check if all your websites are listed there so that you can hotlink on your images on those websites.

6. Further down below the page, click the textbox labeled as “Extensions to Allow:” and input there the extensions you would want to Hotlink and separate each using a comma. Click the text box just below the text box you just dealt with.

7. Enter a URL you would want to redirect anyone to if they try to link to your files/images. There are cases though when you want someone to gain access over the URL of a protected file. Check the “Allow direct requests page” check box by clicking on it.

8. Click the Submit Button.

9. Hotlink protection enabling is a success! The websites listed on the “Allowed Referrers” can hotlink to the file extensions shown below. Click the Go Back link.

10. If the desire to disable hotlink protection comes, simply click the Disable button.

11. The page indicates that the Hotlink protection is disabled. Click the Home icon in the upper left corner.
