Using File Manager in cPanel Tutorial

cPanel is a program where you can manage and perform various functions on your website files. It is an alternative, easy and less complicated way of managing website files without having to use a File Transfer Protocol otherwise known as FTE.

These are the steps on how to use the ‘File Manager’ feature of cPanel:

1. First, log on to your cPanel account.

2. Once in the cPanel screen, scroll down.

3. Under the Files section, click the File Manager icon.

4. This brings you to the File Manager interface wherein a user can perform several functions such as: upload files to your account, delete files, change file permission, among others. On the left half of the screen, you will find a collapsible list of folders in your account.

5. Click the first folder (/home/abc12c).

6. Then click on the “public_html” subfolder.

7. On the right half of the screen, you will see the list of folders and files contained in the folder selected on the left.

8. Click on the “public_html” folder icon at the left half of the screen.

9. The “public_html” folder is the folder that will contain all website files such as html pages, gif images, etc. in your account

10. The next steps will show how to upload a sample cgi script into the cgi-bin folder of the account.

11. Under “the public_html”, click the “cgi-bin” folder icon.

12. At the top of the page, click the “Upload” icon.

13. This will bring you to the page wherein you can upload the files you wish to upload. Click the “Browse” button.

14. The File Upload box will appear and from which, you can search for the file you wish to upload. For example, click on the test_scriptl.cgi file.

15. Click “Open”. The test_script.cgi file will now be uploaded. You may upload multiple files at once by repeating steps 11 and 12.

16. To return to the File Manager main screen, click on the link “Back to /home/abc123c/public_html/cgi-binYou will then see the file which you have successfully uploaded to the cgi-bin folder. In this case, the test_scriptl.cgi file has been successfully uploaded to the cgi-bin folder.
Next, click on the newly uploaded file – test_script.cgi.
This will allow you to perform several functions with your files using File Manager program. These functions include but are not limited to deleting, renaming, and viewing a file by clicking in the Delete, Rename, and View icons, respectively, at the top pane of the screen.

17. You may also change the access settings of the file you are working with. This may be done by clicking on the “Change Permissions” icon at the top part of the screen.

18. You will then see a box indicating the mode through which the file may be accessed (either Read, Write and Execute), and who will be able to access the file (User, Group, World).

19. Tick on the Execute box under User.

20. Tick on the Execute box under Group.

21. Tick on the Execute box under World.

22. Select the “Change Permissions” button. Now the permission level of the file “test_scriptl.cgi” has been changed and is now taking effect.

23. To move the file to a different location, keep the file highlighted and at the top portion of the screen, click on the “Move” icon.

24. In the box, input the location where you want the file to be transferred (for example, /public_html/demo). Then, click “Move File(s)”. Another way of moving a file is to click on their icon and then drag the file to the folder on the left where you wish to move the file.

25. The test_scriptl.cgi file is no longer in the “public_html” folder.

26. Select the “demo” folder at the left side of the screen.

27. You will see that the test_scriptl.cgi folder is now under it.

28. To erase the file, keep the file highlighted and then click on the “Delete” icon at the top.

29. A notification box will pop-out confirming the file to be deleted. Click on “Delete Files”.

30. The file that was originally uploaded has successfully been deleted.
